Well, I don't think I
have regretted joining Catholic High. I have made many new
friends since joining this school and I can't imagine what would
happen without them. They have had a tremendous influence on my
life like encouraging me to join the band etc..
There are many ECAs ( Extra Curriculum Activites ) to join in Catholic High School. There are currently 5 uniformed groups, mainly the NPCC, NCC (Land), NCC (Air), Military Band, and Scouts.
The NPCC won a silver award in a nationwide proficiency judging.
NCC (Land) is a gold unit.
NCC (Air) has 2 best cadets in the specialist course.
Military Band won a silver award in the SYF indoor central judging competition this April.
Scouts won the Lorequest competition, and came in 3rd in the National Orienteering competition.
There are also numerous clubs and societies, sports and games. A cause for special mention are our school athletics. They managed to win a 2nd placing in 'C' ( 13-14 Years ) division, and 3rd placing in 'B' (15-16 Years ) division during the National Cross Country Championships this year 1998. It was the first time that such good results have been produced.
Catholic High is a Singapore Secondary School located in Bishan Street 22, just 5 minutes walk from Junction 8 and Bishan MRT station. Surrounded by blocks of housing flats, it presents a very good and quiet environment for us students to study.
We have a new principal and
vice-principal for 1998. The principal is Mrs. Goh Hwee Choo, 50
and the V.Principal is Mr Leuar Boon Char, 39. The V.Principal
for the Primary school section has also been changed to Miss
Cecilia Lim Seok Cheng. Although most of us in the school feel
rather sad for our former principal Mr. Loke Kay Kee and V.P. Mr
Png leaving the school, I personally wish them best of luck in
the coming years managing their new schools, YuYing Sec. &
Pei Cai Sec. respectively.
Mrs. Goh being our new principal is the first ever lady to manage
our school for the entire school's history. However, I believe
she can do her best in helping Catholic High do better in the
coming years.
The picture you see above was taken by school photographers.
Actually, the entire school building houses the primary and secondary sections, but we do not interact or interfere with the business with the primary side. They study in the blocks surrounding the clock tower, while the secondary section studies in the block facing the field.
There are a total of around 38-40 classes altogether, divided rather equally between the four secondary levels. We study from 7:15a.m. to 1:45p.m. with a break of 30 minutes at 10:50a.m. After school, most students go back home. Some stay back to play soccer, while the rest have their ECAs (Extra Cirruculum Activities) until 5 or 6. Most of the uniformed group ECAs also have trainings and practices on Saturday mornings.
In 1997, our school ranking in Singapore was 19th. So for this year, the Old Boy's Association has decided to give out a new scholarship for those Top 5% of the PSLE students (Primary School Leaving Examination) ( >265 marks??) and joined Catholic High School. There were 4 receivers of this award for this first time and the OSA has indicated that there will be no limit on the number of recipients of this award in the future. This scholarship is supposed to attract more students of better calibre to our school and boost our school ranking.
Right now, the school is trying out several new methods of teaching, like using computers for lessons like Mathematics and English, and using open book tests. Hope these new methods of teaching will be successful in schools.
