Firstly, I must admit that I don't know much about the history of Catholic High School Military Band. I only know that it was formed many many years ago. Our School Band today is made up of around 60-70 members from Secondary 1 to 4. They are quite a few sections of the band. They are the Clarinet Section, Flute Section, Saxaphone Section, Trumpet Section, French Horn Section, the Base and Baritone Section, Trombone Section and lastly the Percussion Section. I am in the Clarinet Section.
Our Conductress is Mrs. Anne Wong who is also teaching Saint Nicholas Symphonic Band. Every Tuesday and Thursday, we have band practice after school till about 5:30 p.m. Saturday practice starts at 7:30 in the morning and we have a drill session until around 10:30 when our band conductress shows up. From then on until 12:30, we will have a combined session together playing and practicing band pieces.
In 1996, we took part in the National Day Parade. Our Band Display item was to be put up with 13 other schools and every Saturday, we went to the SAFTI Military Institute in Tuas. The practices intensified when the NDP drew closer and closer. However, the entire display was a success and everyone went home from the experience very happy.
In 1997, we had our SYF Indoor Band Presentation. We played the set piece Republica and our choice piece was Fanfare and Intermezzo. Those days leading up to the actual competition were really hard on us. Practice was extended to about 4 times a week, but our hard work finally paid off when we got a Silver in the competition.
In the same year, we decided to stage our second public concert Aesthetique 2 in our school audithorium. It was another bout of hard work from every band member who wanted to make the concert a big success. Of course, the concert went very well.
This year, 1998, we had a combined concert with Saint Nicholas Symphonic Band on June 6th, Saturday. The concert was a great success, and both bands had the time of their lives. I really do hope that there will be more combined concerts to come, and also that an alumni band will be formed for us leaving sec4s. Sigh. I really can't bear to leave the band.
